Software Quality Tester

What are we looking for?
- Programming experience. So you know how to code and stuff.
- This is a 10-12 week internship where you will actually be a real person so you have to be able to work for all of Summer 2019.
- Students must not be graduating prior to the beginning of the internship, and be enrolled to return to school after the internship ends.
- Coding matters. Java, HTML, bash, perl, python, php, etc
- Linux, Unix, or Windows would be great.
- If you know SAS programming that’s an added bonus!
- Teamwork. With a dash of independence.
- Leadership. You sit in the front row of the class.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher. Going to class is #vital.

The NC Division of Air Quality (DAQ)
NC DAQ works with the state’s citizens to protect and improve outdoor, or ambient air quality in North Carolina for the health, benefit and economic well-being of all within the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). To carry out this mission, the DAQ operates a statewide air quality monitoring network to measure the level of pollutants in the outdoor air, develops and implements plans to meet future air quality initiatives, assures compliance with air quality rules, and educates, informs and assists the public regarding air quality issues.
Mobile Sources Branch
The two intern positions will mainly reside in the Mobile Sources Compliance Branch (MSCB) in the Technical Services Section of DAQ. The MSCB is responsible for creating, maintaining and ensuring the programs required in this State regarding vehicle emissions are complying with state and federal rules and regulations.
Mobile Source Compliance Branch activities include:
The intern positions will also have an opportunity to work our Allied Programs staff on educational outreach projects as part of DAQ’s Air Awareness Program. N.C. Air Awareness is a public outreach and education program of DAQ. The goal of the program is to reduce air pollution though voluntary actions by individuals and organizations. The program seeks to educate individuals about the sources of air pollution and explain how the health effects of air pollution can be minimized by modification of outdoor activities on ozone action days. In addition, the program aims to inform the public of ways to minimize production of air pollutants to improve air quality over time.
Allied Program Branch activities include:

- 1. Proposal application reviews and emission reduction calculations – 50% DAQ will receive proposal applications for the request for proposals for the VW Settlement Program to replace older diesel vehicles and equipment with new cleaner diesel or alternative fueled models and for installing zero emission vehicle charging infrastructure. The interns will assist the VW team in reviewing applications for completeness and calculating the expected emissions reductions for each project application. This will involve using the USEPA Diesel Emission Quantifier and Argonne National Laboratory GREET tools to calculate the expected nitrous oxide, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- 2. Grant Management System/Power BI integration – 15% DAQ is in the process of developing grant management system for applicants to submit proposal applications electronically. The interns will be responsible for integrating the data exported from the system and using Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (Power BI), to make the data available for public consumption. Power BI is a business analytics software tool to provide interactive visualizations with self-service business intelligence capabilities, where end users can create reports and dashboards by themselves without having to depend on information technology staff or database administrators. The interns will the opportunity to learn and use Power BI.
- 3. Assist Grant staff with grant follow-up site visits – 15% The interns will have the opportunity to travel with the Mobile Sources staff to complete site visits to previous Diesel Emission Reduction Act grant recipients and VW Settlement award recipients. The purpose of these visits is to follow-up with grantees to evaluate the success of their projects and prepare a success story write up for each grant recipient for the DAQ webpage.
- 4. Assist with other Mobile Sources Activities – 10% Assist vapor recovery specialist and program engineer with field inspections to learn about gasoline vapor recovery control systems at gasoline service stations and bulk plants. This involves traveling to gasoline service stations and bulk plants to perform an inspection of the vapor recovery equipment to make sure it is properly installed and maintained. The interns will also have an opportunity to learn about the other programs in Mobile Sources Compliance Branch.
